Vancouver ESL Schools facing a collapse in enrollments?

February 26, 2009

I found this on the Vancouver Sun website.  I think I’ve met Toby, I’ve certainly heard a lot about him from some different agencies.  he’s definitely well respected in the industry.  In this interview, he’s saying that he’s heard enrollment is down accross the board at ESL schools – I don’t know, I’ve heard differently.  I’ve been asking around as well – somehow enrollments are holding up.

From the Sun:

It’s still early days, but cracks are definitely starting to show in at least in one area, said Chu.

“The global financial crisis is affecting many ESL [English-as-a-Second-Language] schools because learning a new language can be considered a luxury item and affordable to parents when times are good,” he said. “Obviously, there will always be a portion of international students who need to learn a new language. But, the majority of ESL students, particularly international students from Japan and Korea, has declined significantly. This is a common echo for many ESL schools in Vancouver.”
