Visa options for work placement participants in Canada

Work Permit – Study permit holders in Canada can apply for a work permit for co-op and internship programmes that will enable them to undertake a work placement in Canada for a period of time that cannot exceed their period of study. The course provider must verify that the work placement is an integral part of the study programme. The Off-Campus Work Permit Programme also allows foreign students at post-secondary institutions to work off-campus for a maximum of 20 hours a week while completing their studies.

Working holiday visa – nationals of Germany, France, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Latvia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and Japan can apply for a work holiday visa that allows them to work in the country for between six and 18 months depending on their nationality.

How do you think the work experience sector is developing in Canada?
“This sector, although lagging behind other English speaking countries, is certainly stirring up a lot of interest in Canada and we are seeing an increased number of students who would like to gain international work experience [in a Canadian company]”
Magda Link, Ilac, Toronto, ONT

“With the economic explosion in Alberta and British Columbia and the need for these regions to attract foreign and temporary workers to keep the economy growing, the international awareness and image of the country as a land of plenty has increased.”
David Oancia, Hansa Language Centre, Toronto, ONT

“International student numbers are dropping and the ESL business is struggling to survive in a rapidly changing market. Schools and colleges like ours have adapted to the change and we essentially guarantee employment upon successful completion of programmes.”
John Skwarok, Concordia Career College, Vancouver, BC
